Graphic Designer Hourly Rate Calculator: how it works

Design is one of the most underpriced freelance services because so much of the work is invisible to the client: mood boards, three directions they never see, file prep, font licensing, and the fourth round of revisions. If your rate only covers the hours in the final deliverable, the rest comes out of your evenings.

This page preloads RateCalc with figures that fit an independent graphic designer: a $65,000 take-home goal, roughly $4,500 a year in subscriptions and assets, and five billable hours a day. Adjust them to your situation and read your rate on the right.

The costs designers forget to include

Add these to the expenses field before you trust the result:

Then be honest about billable hours. Designers who log their time usually find four to five client-billable hours in an eight-hour day; the rest is feedback loops, admin and finding the next project.

From hourly rate to package prices

Clients buy logos and brand systems, not hours, so use the hourly figure as an internal floor and sell packages. A simple method: estimate hours for each deliverable, multiply by your rate, then add a margin for revisions you are including (typically two rounds) and the strategic value of the work. A logo that takes 20 hours at $85 is a $1,700 floor; sold as a package with research, three concepts and brand files, $2,000 to $3,500 is common.

State what is included in writing, charge for extra revision rounds at your hourly rate, and ask for 50 percent up front. Each of those three habits protects the rate you just calculated.

      Frequently asked questions

What do freelance graphic designers charge per hour?

Broadly $35 to $75 an hour for early-career designers and $75 to $150 for experienced brand or UI designers in North America and Western Europe. Local markets differ, which is why calculating from your own costs beats copying a range.

Should I charge per hour or per project for logo design?

Per project, priced from your hourly rate. Fixed prices reward you for being fast and keep the conversation about outcomes rather than timesheets.

How do I price unlimited revisions requests?

Don't offer them. Include two rounds in the package and quote additional rounds at your hourly rate; the calculator's project box gives you that number.

      Is RateCalc free for designers?

Yes. The calculator, the breakdown chart and the share link are free and run in your browser. Pro adds saved profiles, side-by-side comparison and a printable rate report.
